The American Revolution A Historiographical Introduction

The American Revolution, also known as the U.S. War of Independence, started in the early 1700s and ended in the late 1700s. This war was started in an attempt to end the tension between the American colonies and the British government. After reading the article, â€Å"The American Revolution: A Historiographical Introduction,† provided by The British Library, and â€Å"The Historiography of the American Revolution† by Michael Hattem, I have a better overall understanding of how the history of the American Revolution has changed over time. If I were to continue writing the article â€Å"The American Revolution: A Historiographical Introduction,† provided by The British Library I would choose to use a book titled â€Å"Revolutionary Characters: What Made The Founders Different,† written by Gordon S. Wood, and a book titled â€Å"Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation,† written by Joseph J Ellis as reference. The article â€Å"The American R evolution: A Historiographical Introduction,† provided by The British Library, goes over how the American Revolution’s history has changed throughout the years following it. The events of history cannot be changed but depending on the person explaining it is, the perspective will change. These student would ultimately receive somewhat of an incentive to complete two years at a college or to service in the military in order to be permanent residents of the US. We discussed how some students are afraid to fill out paperwork because of what could happen from writing their name down on an official document, and I don’t blame them. The research shows the DREAM Act is such an important tool in helping these students advance in life and stop living in fear. I remember in 2012 reading articles stating that Obama basically passed the DREAM Act by himself. I didn’t do any research on it and I deffinetly did not know what the DREAM Act was my freshman year in college. Doing this research paper made me go back and look up those articles. One article (Amira, 2012) talks about a new Homeland Security policy which allows illegal immigrants between the ages of 15 and 30 years old, who came to the US at a young age will no longer have to live in fear of deportation. Space and decoration in hellenistic houses Essay The decoration of walls and lloors was used to structure thr spare in Hellenistic houses, by means of hierarchies which would have been easily tradable by a contemporary observer, but which need to be elucidated before we can understand their workings. I shall propose possible structures for these hierarchies in the design of mosaics and wall paintings, and then analyse some surviving houses, to show how their schemes of decoration might have worked in practice. A more detailed understanding of decoration should also be a useful tool for appreciating differences in status between houses at the same site and comparing houses across different sites. Moreover, studying the decoration of these houses gives an insight into changing patterns in the use of domestic space in the Hellenistic period. Most of the examples arc taken from Delos and Morgantina, which were abandoned in the late Hellenistic period or soon after, and thus preserve a range of housing in morc-or-lcss its late Hellenist ic state. The discussion will be dominated by mosaics and other types of pavement, as these tend to survive better than fragile wall plaster: the conclusions suggested are therefore incomplete and rather tentative. I shall mainly be concerned mainly with tessellated mosaics, which first appeared in the Greek world in the third century BC, replacing pebble mosaics as the standard type of decorated mosaic. The standard composition was the same in tessellated mosaic as in pebble mosaic (FIGS. 2, 3, 10, 13): it consisted of a decorated ‘carpet’ framed by a series of concentric borders with geometric, vegetal or figured decoration, around a central field which might he left plain, filled with geometric patterns or plant motifs, or decorated with a figured scene; the carpet was enclosed by a plain surround, which was often interrupted by a small decorated ‘mat* in front of the door. This composition was shaped by the function of the rooms in which the earliest mosaics were used: the majority of pebble mosaics in houses were in the andron or dining room, and they were designed to be viewed by the diners reclining on couches around the sides of the room.* Unlike pebble mosaics, tessellated mosaics arc found in rooms of all shapes and sizes opening off the central courtyard or peristyle of the house.3 Very few are in traditional   andrones with a raised border for couches , but it is still likely that many rooms with mosaics were used for dining, as they often have a broad, plain outer border of appropriate width for couches. Mosaics in ground-floor living-rooms arc roughly equally distributed between large and small rooms, although the small rooms are of two types: about a third are exedras with open fronts, and the rest have doors of normal width; it is not clear whether they were used for different purposes. The large rooms are of various shapes, but the most characteristic type is rectangular, with the entrance on one of the long sides (conventionally labelled the onus by modern authors). The most striking difference between the distribution patterns of pebble and tessellated mosaics is that a large proportion of tessellated mosaics were on upper floors, whereas all the known pebble mosaics were on the ground floor: leaving aside those in courtyards and vestibules (which, obviously, are always on the ground floor), tessellated mosaics are almost equally divided between ground and upper floor rooms. I have argued elsewhere that there appears to have been a general inflation in the decoration of private houses by the late Hellenistic period: four times as many houses have mosaics on Delos as at Olynthos, and the Delian houses have wall plaster in every room, whereas at Olynthos plaster was restricted to a fcwr rooms (most frequently the andron), and about half of the houses had none at all.4 Delos was an unusually rich community, and perhaps not strictly typical, but there is enough evidence from elsewhere to support the picture of increased luxury and ostentation. Wher eas in the fourth century a house with more than one decorated dining room was exceptional, it is not uncommon for late Hellenistic houses to have several rooms with mosaics and highly elaborate wall decoration. The finds from Delos illustrate another aspect of this decorative inflation: a large quantity of sculpture was found in the houses, ranging from small statuettes of stone or terracotta to life-size marble figures.5 Large-scale sculptures must have been especially prized: where bases survive in situ, it ran be observed that statues were carefully positioned to create attractive vistas, and it is likely that in some cases the placing of sculptures was planned when a house was built or remodelled; moreover, many of the niches in interior walls were probably intended to hold smaller figures. However, unlike mosaics and paintings, sculpture is portable, and it is rarely safe to assume that eventual findspots correspond to original locations: the frequency with which parts of the same statue are found in different rooms or even different houses is instructive. It is therefore rarely possible to give full weight to the part played by sculpture when considering the overall decorative programme of the house. As in the Classical period, the decoration is used to mark out hierarchies of space. The relative importance of the rooms is indicated by a hierarchy of pavement types and by the varying complexity of the designs on the pavements, complemented by wall painting, which was capable of expressing more subtly nuanccd distinctions. Decorative Hierarchies: Waei. Painting EssayThese arc found mainly in the less visible outer borders (Delos 171, 325) and in simple designs, most   commonly a chequerboard of black and white tesserae (Delos 10-12, 40, 44-6, 84). In two cases (Delos 10 and 12) the chequerboard forms a carpet with a red frame made of short strips of tile, up to 4 cm long, which again were presumably quicker and easier to lay than individual tesserae. Savings could also be made in the decoration of the pavement, by reducing the complexity of the design: tessellated mosaics tend to have broad plain bands between the decorated borders, and the central field is often left plain or filled with a repeating pattern. Repetitive geometric borders and simple coloured stripes separated by large expanses of plain mosaic would be relatively quick to lay, and might be made by a less skilled mosaicist. Figured work, on the other hand, is rare and usually confined to a small area of the pavement. It must have been very expensive, as it was most effective when executed in tiny tesserae of many colours {opus vtrmiculatum-. FIG. 4 a), often in costly materials such as glass and faience, and it required the services of a highly skilled craftsman for a long period; the many holes where figured panels have been prised out of the pavements attest to their high value. In general, there is a tendency for the finest tesserae and the most colourful and elaborate motifs to be placed nearer the centre, which limited their area, while the size and irregularity of the materials increase towards the edges of the floor. A customer commissioning a mosaic obviously had to weigh the complexity of the decoration against the size and regularity of the materials, and it is possible to guess at the compromises made by individual customers in order to get the desired area of mosaic for the price that they were able or willing to pay. The most striking example is the Maison des masques, which has four mosaics, three in very large rooms, and all with more than basic geometric decoration: one has two complex rosettes inhabited by tiny birds, and was later further elaborated by the addition of a still life of an amphora and a palm-branch (Delos 217); one has a border of comic masks linked by an ivy scroll (Delos 215); and two are figured, one showing Silcnos dancing to music played by a satyr (Delos 216), and the other Dionysos riding a leopard, flanked by centaurs (Delos 214). In terms of size, individualization and complexity, this is the most impressive mosaic ensemble on Delos. However, the ambitious design s arc not matched by the execution. With the exception of the Dionysos panel (FIG. 4 a), which was a prefabricated embUma, the mosaics arc entirely in standard-sized tesserae, mostly very irregular in shape, and laid carelessly and not very close together (FIG. 4 b). The overall effect is crude, and parts of the figured scenes arc difficult to make out: Silcnos appears to have only one arm. and the object held by one of the centaurs Is an unidentifiable blob. The mosaicists did not even manage to insert the Dionysos tmblana correctly, leaving roughly-patched gaps around the panel. It is hard to escape the conclusion that the owner of the house had aspirations beyond his means.

The Beatles The Beatles The Beatles started out in the British city, Liverpool where music was a way of life for many people. The Beatles were preceded by a John Lennon fronted band called the Quarry men. The group invited a 15 year old boy named Paul McCartney to see them perform a show. The then 16 year old John Lennon took to McCartney, that's when a unique and amazing song writing partnership began. The Quarry Men ended up falling apart at the seams. John Lennon and Paul McCartney kept in touch and eventually asked George Harrison to join they're group, tentatively named the Silver Beatles. The band talked a friend of theirs, Stuart Sutcliff, into buying a bass guitar, and added Pete Best on drums. They began getting recognition around Liverpool. That was around that time that Brian Epstein heard them playing and proposed that he assume position of their manager. The Beatles agreed and Epstein quickly arranged for them to go to Hamburg, Germany to play the local music clubs. While in Germany the band me t Ringo Star, who later officially joined the band, taking over for Pete Best. When the band was to return to England, Stuart decide that he wanted to stay in Germany with the girl he had met and fallen in love with there. So Paul picked up the bass guitar, they dropped the Silver from their name, and the Fab Four, as we came to know them, was ready for success. The Beatles were now ready to record their first album. Epstein introduced the band to the man sometimes referred to as the 5th Beatle, George Martin. Martin went on to produce all but one of the Beatles albums. Love me Do was their first record, released in October 1962. It did jump into the British Top 20 briefly but never really succeeded. It was the second song ?Please Please me? released in early 1963 which made them #1. The single topped the British charts for 30 weeks, an unheard of feat in the UK music market. They're second album is what really put them over the top in terms of popularity. In 1963 with the release of ?With the Beatles?, the band found success in both the UK and US, with the single ?I wanna hold your hand?. In February the Band visited the US to play on the Ed Sullivan show. Many people consider the Ed Sullivan show appearance to be the coming out party for the Beatles especially in America. For many it was their first glimpse of the fab four. There was much hype even before the broadcast. It was a time in America when Elvis had lost his edge, Ricky Valines, and the Big Bopper were killed, also the beloved president, John F. Kennedy was assassinated. The Beatles promised something new and fresh and had an attitude people liked. Anthony Corbett, a noted English psychologist praised the Beatles as having provided ?a desperately needed release for the inhibitions that exist in all of us?. Whatever it was, the Beatles had something the people needed because like so many bands of today their success didn't end there. Next, the Beatles made their first movie, ?A Hard Days Night?. Followed by extensive touring, and dominance of the billboard charts. Then their second movie ?Help? was released to sell out box offices across the world. Fredric Lewis of a London newspaper examined the sociological implications of Beatle-Mania and said ?they are working class and their roots and their attitude are firmly in the north of England. They are part of a strong-flowing reaction against the soft, middleclass south of England, which has controlled popular culture for so long? He added ?Because of their success, they can act as spokesman for the new, noisy, anti-establishment generation which is become a force in British life?. One can assume then, that people were ready for a change. The Beatles were one band that could offer change. With forthcoming albums ,such as ?Revolver?, ?Rubber Soul?, and ?Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band?, the Beatles proved that change was a very good thing. ?Sgt. Peppers? was considered the first concept album(songs unified by a common theme). Life Cycles Of Paper And Plastic Bags Environmental Sciences Essay This research performs life-cycle assessments on two products-plastic bags and paper bags. The two products are considered to be substitutes for one another, and the end objective of the life-cycle assessments performed on the two products is to compare the life-cycle costs of the two products for the purpose of recommending a production strategy for a company that produces bags. A life-cycle assessment for paper bags is presented in the following section, and this presentation is followed by a presentation of a life-cycle assessment for plastic bags in the succeeding section. Following the presentations of the two life-cycle assessments, the two substitute products are compared with the emphasis being placed on the full costs of the products for the manufacturing company. Recommendations and conclusions based on this comparison are then presented. Life cycle assessment attempts to measure the total environmental effects of a product from cradle to grave. Proponents contend that life-cycle assessment can provide the information to assess tradeoffs throughout the life of every product. Life-cycle assessment permits producing organizations to determine the environmental impact of both their products and the manufacturing processes used in the production of those goods. As manufacturing companies have experienced increasing pressures to minimize adverse environmental effects of all types, therefore, life-cycle assessment has assumed greater importance in manufacturing management. The initial step in a life-cycle assessment involves the establishment of the purpose of the study and defining the objectives of the study. This step for this current examination was established in the initial paragraph of this Introduction. The second step of a life-cycle assessment is the life-cycle inventory. In the life-cycle inventory, energy and raw material requirements and environmental emissions of the product and its manufacturing process are quantified. Precise and extensive calculations are involved in this step. Totals for all material requirements and environmental emissions are presented for all stages of production, from raw materials acquisition to waste management. The third step is an impact assessment, which attempts to translate the life-cycle inventory data into effects on human health, ecological health, and resource depletion, which are the impacts of the product and its manufacturing process on the environment. The impact assessment is accomplished by classifying the inventory items into condition groups that may lead to an environmental impact. The final step in a life-cycle assessment is an improvement analysis. The improvement analysis develops recommendations based on the results of the life-cycle inventory and the life-cycle impact assessment. Such recommendations may include the modification of a production process, the use of different raw materials, or choosing one product over another, as is the case in this current study. The steps of the life-cycle assessment process from life-cycle inventory through life-cycle improvement analysis are addressed in this current study in the following two sections. In these two sections, these steps of the life-cycle assessment process are developed for both plastic bags and paper bags. Life-Cycle Assessment: Plastic Bags The life-cycle assessment of plastic bags is presented in relation to life-cycle inventory, life-cycle impact assessment, and life-cycle improvement analysis. Life-Cycle Inventory The life-cycle inventory analysis is a technical, data-based process of quantifying energy and raw material requirements, atmospheric emissions, waterborne emissions, solid wastes, and other releases for the entire life cycle of a product, package, process, material, or activity. In this section, the life-cycle inventory is developed for plastic bags. In the broadest sense, a life-cycle inventory analysis begins with raw material extraction and continues through final product consumption and disposal. The scope of the life-cycle inventory refers to the setting of boundaries for the life-cycle inventory of a specific product. A flow chart of the life cycle of plastic bags is presented in Exhibit 1. The exhibit may be found on the following page. The flow of the life cycle of plastic bags is illustrated in Exhibit 1. This flow begins (PE) petroleum extraction, and progresses through (PR) petroleum refining, (Pl-E) plastic extrusion, (Pl-F) plastic fabrication, (PB-M) plastic bag manufacture, (Tr) transportation of plastic bags to initial users, (IU) initial use, (SU) secondary use, (UD) user disposal, and thence to either (Rcy) recycling or (LFD) landfill disposal. Recommendations For the company manufacturing bags, the recommendation is that plastic bags continue to be produced. Although the company does not now produce paper bags, the recommendations is that such production not be commenced. Conclusions One conclusion drawn from the findings of this study is that plastic bags are a more economic product for the manufacturer than are paper bags. A second conclusion is that plastic bags are less harmful to the ecology than are paper bags.

Comparing the Role of the Black in the South in Clotelle and Absalom, A

Role of the Black in the Southern Family as Evidenced in Clotelle and Absalom,   Absalom!  Ã‚  Ã‚        Ã‚   Southern Literature, more than anything else, is a discussion of the family. And in the family, particularly the Southern family, no question is as pivotal--or causes as many disputes--as "who belongs?" Southern Literature has been, in many ways, a canon of exclusion. From a culture built upon controlling and utilizing an entire race for the express purpose of advancing another, a canon of yearning and despair is left. And in no place is this as clear as within the family, the unit by nature designed to nurture and support--and ultimately overcome. Stereotypically, the family longed for by every Southerner is one of impeccable repute, a white triumph, clean of any African blood, with a heritage predating the Revolution and a lineage reaching beyond the next millennium. Clotelle, by William Wells Brown, is an appeal to the Southern ideal that African-Americans do not and can not fit into the traditional, lily-white aristocratic familial structure which ruled the South during his time--and reigned for many years thereafter. Traditional Southern canon emphasizes the Thomas Sutpens--of William Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom! --who ejects African-Americans from his family (as he attempts to create a new one), and men like the Sheriff of Charles W. Chesnutt's "The Sheriff's Children," who sells a pregnant slave--carrying his unborn mulatto child--into slavery. The advancement and protection of one's name is also highlighted by Sutpen and by Clara Hohlfelder in another Chesnutt tale, "Her Virginia Mammy." These are ideals which Brown understands and resists, and tries--ultimately in vain--to defy. Clotelle does not adjust itself to the tr... ...ildren are born as a result--are disposed of as quietly as possible, in order to keep the familial superstructure as maximally pure as possible. A white man does not marry a slave, or make a respectable woman of her. He keeps her and his child in a shed outside of town, he sends them to New Orleans, or sells them to the rice swamps to toil under the whip for the remainder of their lives. Southern literature excludes the African-American from its families, thus robbing her of her identity and forcing her to become a mere brick in the base below the superstructure. This is to symbolise how she (Like Macbeth) are king and queen but have a worthless throne. The gold in the crown (riches and wealth that come with being king/queen) show that they may have had more riches/wealth if they were pronounced the heirs other than through murder.The blood wiping out the gold is to show how since they killed Duncan, they are now no longer given riches or promised the throne forever. All of this shows to us how impulsive Lady Macbeth is. â€Å"what cannot you and I perform upon th’unguarded Duncan? † (I, vii, 69-70). She didn’t think of the consequences or the results of her actions. Of how their sacrifice will be futile until they have a son to claim and secure their throne and line of kings. Lady Macbeth has a letter hanging from her body. This is to show how she is literate. â€Å" they met me in the day of success†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (I, v, 1-13). During this era, women were thought to be lower than men and were not supposed to be educated. However, the first time Lady Macbeth was introduced was through her reading a letter.It also reveals to us that she is ahead of her time. She is quite distinctive compared to other typical women during that era. Another reason why she is ahead of her time is because she finds herself to be on par with her husband. It’s showing us a more dominant side to her where she’s elevated herself to his status. In addition to herself, Macbeth also finds her to be an equal to him. â€Å"This have I thought good to deliver thee, my dearest partner of greatness† (I, v, 9-10). Lady Macbeth is well-dressed in rich clothes to show that she is well-respected. An example of this is through King Duncan â€Å"See, see, our honour’d hostess. (I, vi, 11). She is thought to be worthy in every aspect and is therefore fit for clothes for a queen. Yet the clothes seem too big for her. Lady Macbeth is in a position of status that she does not f it to be in. Also, the reason why her clothes are too big for her is because she has belittled herself so much in the act of killing the King that any level of the Great Chain of Being would be too high in moral ground for her. (The size of clothes would all be too big for her). Her red hair is to symbolise how she is unappreciative and unaccepting towards her husband.She is always trying to change him â€Å"yet do I fear they nature, it is too full o’th’milk of human kindness†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (I, v, 15-16) Lady Macbeth doesn’t see him as a man and is always pointing that out to him. She is bullying him around because she needs him to achieve her desires and goals in life. â€Å"Are you a man? † (III, iv, 58) Lady Macbeth has a very guilty conscious. It is symbolised through one of her eyes. It’s to show how Lady Macbeth feels it is alright to do any evil deed as long as it is veiled by the cover of darkness and she doesn’t need to see it hers elf. Come, thick night, and pall thee in the dunnest smoke of hell, that my keen knife see not the wound it makes, nor heaven peep through the blanket of the dark to cry, ‘Hold, hold. ’ (I, v, 49-53) Another way to look at it is by saying that she feels it’s alright to commit a deed with her hands without letting her eyes (conscious) see it. This shows she has strong faith in fate and God because she doesn’t want to be held accountable for her actions. (Predestined) Lady Macbeth isn’t smiling because she is insecure. She is two-faced, ambitious, confident, impul sive, greedy, literate, distinctive, dominant, well-respected, unappreciative, unaccepting, conscious, and insecure. However, the Office for National Statistics finds that that days lost to sickness were fairly evenly spread across the weekdays (Barham & Begum, 2005). Employers are becoming aware of the direct and indirect cost to organization due to high levels of absenteeism. If absenteeism is left unchecked it impacts organizational morale and productivity (HRM Guide, 2001). Organizations now do have absence management policies but these policies must examine the causes of absence and take remedial action. While devising the policies it must be recognized that employees can be genuinely ill also. Hayday (2006) contends that a certain amount of absence is a part of working life and any absent management poli cy must provide support to those who are legitimately absent. At the same time non-legitimate absence has to be discouraged because absenteeism is proving to be costly for both private and public organizations. The cost of sick-notes in the UK has reached GBP 750 million in lost working days (Macnab, 2011). The number of workers facing disciplinary action has doubled since 2010 and thousands of workers have been dismissed because of poor attendance. More than 17 million days have been lost as a result of workers reporting sick over the last five years. The situation is the same in both the private and the public sector, says Macnab but Thomas (2010) contends that the absence costs are higher in the public sector at ?685 per head for 2009 against ?455 in the private sector services and ?545 in manufacturing and production. NHS Lothian faced a loss of GBP 17 million due to absenteeism in the past five years. Unscheduled worker absenteeism results in about 2 to 4 percent loss of workin g time (Bridges & Mumford, 2001). A study of absenteesim across genders reveals that women with dependents are less likely to be absent but those with children below the age of 2 years would frequently absent from work. One of the most respected surveys of UK absence conducted by CBI/Pfizer Absence and workplace health survey revealed that the economy lost 190 million working days to absence in 2010 with each employee taking about 6.4 days of sick on an average (Paton, 2011). This results in direct cost of ?17 billion to the economy while it does not include the indirect cost such as lower customer service and reduced productivity. Another survey by PricewaterhouseCoopers argues that the average UK salary stands at ?25,000 which means the absenteeism was costing the economy approximately ?32 billion per year based on the finding that an average worker took about ten days of unscheduled absence. This figure too does not take into account the potential replacement costs and the lost p roductivity. The survey results may differ on the figures but what is evident is that unscheduled absenteeism is taking a toll on businesses and demands immediate attention. One in three workers in the UK abuse sick days at work costing the UK economy some ?32 billion (Clarke, 2011). However, handovers and good weather are cited as reasons for absenteeism. Some even plan their vacations in advance and fake symptoms by appearing for work with props to justify their sickness. This report by PwC suggests that a large part of this loss is preventable. One of the ways is to introduce flexible working hours. Hayday (2006) divides the causes of absence under four clusters – health and lifestyle, attitude and stress, workplace, and domestic and kinship.

For organisations there might be conflict between the team members therefore some team members might leave the company completely which will cost the business money because they will have to recruit new staff and pay for training and hold meetings about the event/program they are organising. This can also effect the views that team members have of each other, for example the completion rates might become too high (many members want to take leadership or the team) which might cause conflict between friends and colleges. Some workers are highly motivated by heavy workloads and high responsibility (theory X and Y), if a team member who works like this has little responsibilities then they are likely to become demotivated. However it could become the opposite way and a work member could be pressured by the amount of work they have to complete and they might feel unappreciated and stressed which could cause the team to fall. Teams may be time-consuming due to need for coordination and consensus.This could cause conflict with the team member’s social life because of the workloads that they are being given. It is important for a business to allow their team members to have a good amount of social life in order for them to work to a high standard. If the workloads given are highly time consuming then it might take over time and run into the employees leisure time which will affect the levels of happiness and could cause them to become demotivated and their working levels will drop. Impact of leadership In every business and organisation there are different ways of leaderships. Leadership is the way that the managers and team leaders motivate and control their employees, without them then it workers would not know what to do and the businesses will lose money and staff rapidly because of the lack of motivation and skills their employees have. There are five main management styles in business are organisations, these are made up of: †¢Autocratic †¢Democratic †¢Laissez-faire †¢Proactive †¢Reactive Autocratic Each one of the above are differently structured in order to fit the employee’s needs. They all can be related to the theories of Maslow, Herzberg and McGregor. Autocratic style workers are clear on their tasks that they need to complete, however these workers need a controlling environment to become motivated the workers are not quite focused. The manager of an autocratic worker gives the employees a set of tasks to do and they expect the workers to do exactly what they are told and when they are told to do it. There is hardly no opportunity for the autocratic workers to give their opinions to the manager and there is no discussions about the tasks that they have been given, it is a very controlled environment. Autocratic workers can be related to the theory X and Y (however the autocratic workers are only applied to X not Y) An example of an autocratic management style could be a bakery store, as the business became more popular and the demands became higher, the manager decided to become more forceful with the employees to make sure deadlines were complete on time and there was no money lost. Because it was a small business with such high demands then the manager would decide that there would be no room for discussion on the tasks the manager gave them. There are some limitations of an autocratic ran business, autocrats could lead to little motivation. This is because the employees have no say in the business that they are working on which could make the employees feel like they have little importance in the they are working in and they could feel highly pressured into doing some things that they really disagree on. This gives a sense of poor ownership and commitment to the business. Another limitation could be that, if a business is at a peak season and the demands are higher than usual there will be more pressure put on the employees and the manager might find that it is hard to cut the deadlines back even shorter than usual because there is already so much work that are on strict deadlines. Being an autocratic manager could also affect the business over all, this is because new ideas that employees have would not get across to the manager which means new improvements that could enhance the businesses income will not be acted upon. Having an autocratic based business could give some benefits towards not only the staff but the customer’s and consumers. Some examples of organisations that benefit from an autocratic based business are: †¢The armed forces and the police †¢Medical areas like hospitals and sergeants †¢Fire fighters †¢Managers of internships These are all organisations that are almost always under pressure and have little time to discuss the different options available. For example, where there are health and safety issues going on, surgeons can’t afford to spend their time on consulting other people first, they must act fast. This works out well for them because this means that more lives are saved and the business profile is high and caries a good reputation. Managers of internships often use the autocratic way of managing staff because they are often inexperienced, shy and have little confidence. Having a forceful manager controlling them will allow the workers to because confident at work because they will be able to get on with their work. It will also prepare them for the future work because the manager will let them know what is expected from them in other business. One other thing is that the workers will have less time to communicate because the work levels and demands are high. This means less time for d istractions and more motivation for work. Democratic Democratic management is much more lenient than the autocratic style of management this is because the employees have a chance to get their opinions across. They also have an opinion on how the business is run. However, this doesn’t mean that their opinions will change the company or organisation. There are still similarities between democratic and autocratic leaders because there is still a leader that makes the overall decision despite what the employees say. The democratic leaders often set a date in which they take time to talk to all of the employees who have an input about the business; this could be a positive or negative approach. The reason why the manager carefully set a date for this is because it takes a lot of time and patience to listen and take in all the different opinions of people. It doesn’t just take time to listen and observe to the employees, it also takes careful analysing to decide to take action and change the businesses ways because of the empl oyees’ choice. This is also because the manager has to go through the different levels of the hierarchy, therefore this can become very time consuming. Another disadvantage of having a democratic manager is that there will always be either a winner or a loser in some sense. This is because the employees point either gets across and there are significant changes made in the business for the employees benefit, or the managers chooses not to change anything which leaves the employees feeling ignored and demotivated. This can give the employees low motivation because the employees who wanted a change in the work place would have worked relatively hard and spent time planning and prepping for the meeting and the employees would feel like they wasted their valuable time for no reason. However, having a democratic manager is not all negative, having this type of working area can mean the workers are highly motivated for the fact that they feel valued because the managers take part in what they think about the business, and their opinions. Where as if they are not listened to many of the workers would feel like they are just there to work and have little contribution to the company and have no control over anything. Another positive aspect of democratic workers is that when the managers do listen to them, and there is a change made the workers feel proud and they feel like they have made commitments to the work place. This also means that a good relationship is made between the manager and the employees. The employees have more respect for the manager because they took the time to listen to them; in return the employees are likely to work harder. An example of this is, when new initiatives are considered at recruitment consultancy, Longbridge international, they are discussed and agreed collectively, almost 89% of the staff believes they make a valuable contribution to the company and 88% feel that they have/make a difference. (source: applied business text book) This example supports the fact that the employees are motivated by a democratic leader because they are listened to and respected, rather than a manager that doesn’t let them have any control over the work area or themselves. Laissez-faire Laissez-faire management program is a hand off approach, this means that the employees are free to work as they like and they are not put under pressure by their managers like other motivation and management theories. The managers who work like this will potentially give the employees the materials they need to complete the tasks that have been set for them. Laissez-faire workers have their own goals and are self-motivated. However, these workers must be highly experienced and motivated and who have a need for achievement to work because there is no manager pressuring for work. If an inexperienced worker comes into an atmosphere like this it is highly likely that the company will suffer with poor communication and lack of work on deadlines. This could happen because employees are not used to have a very free environment and they might take advantage of this. This type of management styles is highly popular within more creative businesses, this is because they are allowed to make up d ifferent styles and work by themselves. Some examples of Laissez-faire companies could be: †¢Graphic designer †¢Magazine editor motivational theorists †¢Decorator The work that is more artistic and creative is supposed to reflect of the employee themselves therefore this is why Laissez-faire management style is better because they are allowed this freedom whereas in autocratic and democratic environments they are not which means every ones work will almost be the same. However, the businesses that recruit these types of workers need to carefully think about whom they choose, in interviews they will commonly ask questions relating to their work techniques and they will analyse if the workers can work freely and don’t rely on the managers for advice, help and pressure. By asking these questions they are saving money and time for the business. If they were to recruit a worker that is cauterised as an X theory worker then they will slack off and not complete work on time. An advantage of working like this is that most people dont like having someone looking over their shoulder constantly, so a laissez-faire management style promotes trust i n the workers. The workers also have a feel of importance at work because they aren’t constantly being looked after and they have control of their work life as well as their social and leisure time. Another advantage is that this kind of style is positive only in the case when the employees are very responsible and in case of creative jobs where a person is guided by his own aspirations. In these cases, less direction is required so this style can be good. However there are some limitations to have such a free flowing environment, these can be because an laissez-faire management style makes it easy for workers to do a substandard job or to slack off entirely, and it usually takes a very high-visibility problem to bring such workers to light. This style has more disadvantages because usually it is the result of the lack of interest of the leader that leads to his adopting this style. It proves poor management and makes the employees lose their sense of direction and focus. The disinterest of the management and leadership causes the employees to become less interested in their job and their dissatisfaction increases.
